Dessert Trials

20 Nov

This weekend had me testing out new desserts for Thanksgiving that I’ve never prepared before. It’s both exciting and unnerving when I try out a new recipe because I cannot wait for the delicious outcome yet am also anxious about it coming out terribly oh-so-wrong. Luckily for me the latter did not occur, and what I wound up with were two very scrumptious and lovely pies. I’m going to keep this short because I NEED sleep, I’m literally going to pass out on my keyboard.

To my sometimes wonderful luck, my parents had a dinner to attend on Saturday, so I gave the pies to them for their dinner party to pick out the winner. The first dish I made was a beautifully colorful fruit tart. It wasn’t a traditional tart; I used a graham cracker crust and cream cheese instead of making a custard. I’m not well-versed in custards but really wanted to make something fruity and nicely decorated. I found a recipe online that called for just cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract. What was great about this was it’s simplicity as well as the fact that there was zero bake time. The most work about this was the cleaning and cutting up of the fruits, for which I chose strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. It was great, who wouldn’t like making a no-bake dessert?

The second thing I made was an apple pie tart and I think it might have been my favorite of the two. Coring and peeling apples aside, I like the fact that it required so few ingredients. Just apples, pie crust, and sugar. Honestly if you bought already-made pie crust it would just make this that much easier. And I love the rustic, home-made look of it. As some of you may know I always have trouble with my pie crusts, but because of the rugged look of this pie, you can kind of just piece the crust in the dish and fold it over the apples. Then pop in the oven and 50 minutes later, YA GOT PIE.

By the way I also got an order request for cookies and wanted to share my excitement about that! It’s fine baking for fun and because I love it, but it feels great when I get paid for it. Like maybe I’m doing something right.. :)

As it turns out, the winner came to be the no-bake (bakeless?) fruit tart. Which is just dandy for me, as the oven will be occupied by other yummy things. I will definitely be posting the recipe for it!

I probably won’t be able to update until after Thursday, so I hope anyone that is celebrating has a wonderful Thanksgiving! I can’t wait to pass out after stuffing my face (but not before I get to the desserts).

Love & Sweets,
Mel
